Time of the day

The time of the day is measured in hours, minutes and seconds, starting at midnight of a given day. In different time zones, the exact time of the day is determined by the geographical location and in relation to the position of the sun. Each day is divided into 24 hours, an hour is divided into 60 minutes and the minute is divided into 60 seconds, the leap second being the single exception.

Combined with the date, the time of the day designates an exact point in time. In scientific or technical contexts, the time is sometimes designated by a number between 0 and 1.

Even today in modern Britain, in everyday communication time is usually indicated by numbers between 0 and 12, followed by the adjunct “o'clock”. In formal contexts (e.g. Schedules and time tables, television, news etc.) the 24-hour-format is used to avoid misunderstandings.

Other formats of time indication than the modern 24-hour-format were common until the early modern times. At the time of the French Revolution, there was an unsuccessful attempt to introduce a format that divided the day into 10 hours at 100 minutes.

Until the late 19th century, daily time counting began at the height of noon because, with the help of the sun, this moment was the easiest to define.

In military context, the time is indicated in a special format to avoid misunderstandings with fatal consequences. The minutes are directly linked to the hours, without any unnecessary adjuncts.

Half past eight expressed in tactical time means 0830. The time is then pronounced like a number. Either it's zero-eight-thirty or zero-eight-hundred-thirty.
