Features of a diving watches

A diving watch is a waterproof and pressure-resistant watch. It is specifically adapted to the needs of divers. This includes the highest possible waterproofness, a bezel which can only be rotated counterclockwise to measure the diving time, and the best possible readability under water. A scratch-resistant watch glass, which is usually sapphire glass, is also very useful, because scraping objects can’t be avoided during diving.

It should be waterproof at least up to 20 ATM, which corresponds to a water depth of about 190 meters. It is used to measure the diving time, and for this purpose it is equipped with a rotating bezel. Before diving, the diver adjusts the zero mark of the bezel to the position of the minute hand. When looking at the watch, the diving time can be read immediately.

For safety reasons, the bezel can only be turned counterclockwise. If it is turned unintentionally during the dive, the marked start time is thus always set to be earlier than it actually was. Therefore, no injury to health can occur due to unintentional exceeding of the no-decompression limit.

As we have diving computers today, the classic diving watch is more of a fashionable accessory and luxury object and is no longer needed for diving as a primary display. However, it can fulfil the function of a backup instrument.

In Germany, only watches that meet the criteria of DIN 8306 can be sold as diving watches or diver’s watches. To meet the criteria, it must have a tested waterproofness, a clear readability from a distance of 25 cm, and it needs to function perfectly – even in the dark, as well as the possibility to preselect a time period by a timer or a bezel.

The clockwork is a mechanical precision automatic clockwork, so there’s no need to change a battery, which is particularly noteworthy, because otherwise the waterproofness couldn’t be guaranteed anymore after a battery change.
