The history of AMS

The Black Forest clock factory AMS looks back on a long history rich in tradition. AMS watches have been manufactured in Furtwangen in the Black Forest for more than 160 years.

The watches stand for aesthetics and quality and meet high demands. The range includes both traditional Black Forest craftsmanship and modern watches made of future-oriented materials.

Timeline

1776 – Joseph Mayer trades in clocks and watches in Copenhagen and offers repair services. He is closely related to well-known watchmakers such as Joseph Ganter and Benedikt Faller & Mathäus Hummel.

1838 – His grandson German Mayer, a skilled watchmaker, founds the German Mayer Company in Reading, England, which is an association of watchmakers.

1841 – On 14 December, German’s father Andreas Mayer sends some watch parts to Reading. The invoice of 937 guilders and 5 kreuzers is the first written document about the Mayer clock tradition. For this reason, 1841 is considered the year of foundation.

1900 – In 1900, about 6-8 clockmakers and other assistants work in the clock workshop. The workshop is run by German’s son Joseph Mayer.

1906 – Alois Mayer, the eldest son, builds a high-pressure water pipe and modernises the family business with lathes, gear mills and rolling machines.

1922 – The company is entered in the commercial register as „Alois Mayer, Uhrenfabrik Schönenbach“.

1957 – The A. Mayer OHG under the management of the sons Heinrich (born 1927) and Konrad (born 1930) moves into a new, two-storey factory building in Schönenbach. This allowed production to be boosted many times over.

1981 – AMS-Uhrenfabrik A. Mayer GmbH is founded with Adalbert Mayer (born 1960) joining the circle of shareholders. In January 1993, A. Mayer becomes managing director and manages the company together with his father Heinrich in the sixth generation.

2001 – A new logistics centre is built! A new 1400 square metre hall with a high-bay warehouse for finished products was built at the company’s Schönenbach site. The company employs approx. 20 people and has an operating area of 2500 square metres for stock ladder production, surface processing and assembly.

Our AMS range currently comprises around 700 models. More than 80% of the watches are always in stock at our central warehouse in Osnabrück at Averdiekstraße 28.
