History of Mother's Day
The origins of Mother's Day go back to the American and English women's movement and began in 1865 with the founding of a mothers' movement by the American Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis. The movement was called Mothers Friendship Day, and at the meetings she organized, mothers had the opportunity to exchange views on motherhood and upbringing. The day was also used as a current occasion for pleasant conversations among women. In Europe too, various clubs and movements by and for women emerged in the 1860s, aiming for better educational opportunities for girls, more women's rights and peace projects. The Women’s Environmental Association – founded in 1890 – then campaigned for greater recognition of mothers at international women's congresses.
