AMS 9639 Wall Clock in Sun Shape

Our watch of the week is the AMS 9639 wall clock in the shape of a large sun. Learn more in this article about the sun and, of course, about our AMS watch of the week, which can be used outdoors as well as indoors.

The sun and the solar system

The sun is the star closest to Earth and forms the center of the solar system. It is a medium-sized star in the outer third of the Milky Way. The sun is a dwarf star (yellow dwarf) in the main sequence stage of development. It contains 99.86% of the mass of the solar system. With a diameter of 1.4 million kilometers, it is about 110 times larger than Earth. The surface of the sun shows a changing number of sunspots, which are associated with strong magnetic fields. Along with other phenomena, these are referred to as solar activity. Solar radiation is one of the basic prerequisites for the development of life on Earth. The sun draws the energy for its radiation from the fusion of hydrogen into helium. The sun's path across the sky divides the day and the year. It has long been worshipped in this role in sun cults since ancient times. The astronomical symbol of the sun is ☉.

Our AMS 9639 sundial

Our watch of the week, the AMS 9639, consists of a multicolored, weather-protected metal case in the shape of a sun. The metal has a rusty yellow-gold finish in an antique look. In addition to the metal, the dial is protected by mineral glass. The dial is beige with black Arabic numerals and hands and can display hours, minutes, and seconds. Around this central dial, metal bars are arranged in a sunburst pattern to form the sun's rays. Thanks to the weather-protected case, the vintage wall clock can be mounted indoors as well as outdoors as an outdoor clock. With its special size of 70 centimeters in diameter, the clock is also considered an XXL clock and is shipped as bulky goods within Germany.
