Care Tips for Leather Strap Watches

A stylish leather strap gives a watch a distinctive aesthetic character. To preserve its appearance, careful handling is important. With extra care, the natural signs of wear caused by light and sweat can be minimized. It is essential to start caring for the leather strap before it begins to wear out.

Coated or open-pored smooth leather? Suede or imitation leather?

Of course, every type of leather requires individual, professional treatment. That is why you should know what type it is before looking for the right cleaning product. If you no longer know what type of leather your strap is made of, you can, for example, rub a drop of water on an intact area of the leather strap. If it soaks in and the leather darkens, it is an aniline leather, i.e. an open-pored smooth leather. If the water beads up, it is a coated, pigmented, or surface-dyed smooth leather. Pigmented smooth leathers are most commonly used in the production of watch straps and are the easiest to care for.

Effectively care for and clean pigmented smooth leather

To remove dirt from the leather, use a mild leather cleaner. For effective care and prevention, it is important to treat the strap with a special leather care lotion two to four times a year. If you also want to protect your leather strap from color transfer, simply use a leather sealant. With careful handling and the preventive measures mentioned above, you can extend the life of your leather strap by several years.
