Citizen produced the world's first light-powered analog watches back then. They named the technology used for this Eco-Drive.

How does an Eco-Drive work?
Eco-Drive is a special solar cell technology developed by Citizen. The drive system of an Eco-Drive is designed so that light enters the watch through the dial and charges a rechargeable battery inside. This already works in low indoor light, although sunlight is ideal.
The advantages of an Eco-Drive watch
Owning an Eco-Drive watch instead of a regular watch offers many advantages.
Since the watches charge themselves using light, no battery replacement is necessary. This is not only very sustainable, but also saves time and the cost of a new battery.
Thanks to the continual improvement of the Eco-Drive movement, many of the current models have astonishingly long runtimes. Citizen states the average runtime of a fully charged watch in complete darkness as 6 months. However, there are also models that last up to 10 years.
If a watch is about to run out despite its long runtime, the built-in power-saving mode helps. When this is activated, the hands stop, but the movement keeps running. This can save up to 80% of energy.
