Orloj Tower Clock from Prague

In Prague, the famous astronomical Orloj clock is located on the south wall of the Old Town Hall.
It is also called the Apostles' Clock or the Old Town Astronomical Clock and attracts countless tourists every year.

This major sight in Prague has a long history behind it. Funded by wine taxes, construction of Prague Town Hall began in 1338. Although the approximately 70 m high tower was completed in 1364, it was expanded and rebuilt until the 19th century. The clock built into the tower was given a calendar below the astronomical dial around 1490. Over time, the clock also stopped several times and had to be repaired. It is now a valuable cultural monument in Prague.

The structure of the Orloj clock

The dial with gold and black numerals and time and astronomical displays is positioned at the top. It is the most important part of the clock and originally has three hands:

- The sun hand
- The moon hand
- The ecliptic with zodiac signs

Beneath it is the calendar section.
Figures and automata are also attached to the sides. The Apostles' procession was later installed above all the dials.
