What is mother-of-pearl?

Mother-of-pearl, also known as nacre, from Middle High German berlīnmuoter, means the inner, pearl-like layer of the shell of various mollusks, especially sea and pearl oysters. It is a natural composite material made of calcium carbonate and organic substances that forms the innermost layer or the entire predominantly mineral part of the shell of certain mollusks. Due to its special surface structure, which creates a matte, iridescent sheen when light falls on it, it is used in the production of decorative objects such as jewelry and ornamental buttons. Mother-of-pearl is deposited by numerous mollusks for building their shells, especially by pteriid mussels, including pearl oysters, as well as by top shells, turban shells or round-mouth snails, abalone, and nautiluses, which belong to the cephalopods. The colors of mother-of-pearl vary depending on the species and geographical origin. The layer structures are on the order of the wavelength of visible light. Since part of the incident white light is transmitted and part is reflected at each layer, interference occurs: incident and reflected light waves overlap in such a way that certain portions of the spectrum of white light are canceled out and, depending on the viewing angle, different color tones remain. When mother-of-pearl is moved in the light, it therefore appears to shimmer in many colors.
