General Operating Instructions for Grandfather Clocks

1. Choosing the location

When choosing the location, the following points should be considered:

  • Choose a place where the clock can be set up straight and securely.
  • A location with direct sunlight, immediate proximity to radiators/heat sources and/or drafts should be avoided.
  • Please note that the volume and sound of the clock can be affected by room size, furniture, carpeted floors, etc.

2. Unpacking and setting up the clock

  • Your grandfather clock is delivered in a sturdy shipping carton.
  • Carefully remove all protective paper, film, and adhesive strips.
  • The clock should be set up securely and upright (check with a spirit level).

3. Hanging the pendulum and weights

  • Carefully hang the pendulum onto the pendulum top piece (to do this, hold the pendulum top piece with one hand and hang the pendulum with the other).
  • The pendulum should hang straight when it is not moving. If it does not hang vertically, check whether the case is level.
  • The correct position in the clock is marked on the underside of each weight.
  • Now hang the weights according to the marking on the underside onto the cable guide or the eyelets or hooks on the chain ends.
  • Now move the pendulum to the case wall and let it swing. The initially large pendulum movements become smaller - it swings evenly.

4. Setting the time

  • Set the correct time by first slowly moving the minute hand counterclockwise (i.e. backward) (about 2 hours beyond the actual desired setting).
  • If you move the minute hand counterclockwise as described, the striking mechanism will not be triggered.
  • Then move the minute hand clockwise (i.e. forward) to the desired time and let the clock strike at all trigger points (depending on the model, on the quarter, half, three-quarter, and full hour).
  • The strike is triggered only if the minute hand is not moved too quickly past the respective trigger point.
  • Avoid touching the hour hand so that it does not shift.
  • The clock will now adjust itself automatically within one hour through the built-in strike synchronization and will strike according to the set melody sequence.

5. Setting the moon phase

The moon disc shows the phase of the moon. As long as the clock is running, the moon disc follows the moon phases automatically. If the clock stops, the moon phase must be set again. To set the moon phase

  • Turn the recessed disc in the upper part of the dial clockwise until the moon is directly below the 15 mark.
  • Now use a calendar to determine the date of the last or next full moon. Count the number of days after the last or before the next full moon.
  • Then adjust the moon disc forward or backward by the corresponding number of days. One "click" of the moon disc corresponds to one day.
  • The moon disc is now set.

6. Setting the night shut-off

The night shut-off allows the strike (quarter-hour or hourly strike) to be automatically switched off during the night. The night shut-off is located on the dial at the number 9 or can be switched off with a rod below the dial. The following applies to both versions:

  • Top position: night shut-off on
  • Bottom position: night shut-off off

7. Setting the melody

Clock movements equipped with a melody striking mechanism allow, depending on the model, the playback of "Westminster" (standard) and other melodies. On clocks with three melodies, you can use the strike selection lever to set the different melodies. Make sure the lever always engages cleanly. It should not be between two positions and must under no circumstances be adjusted while the strike is sounding.

8. Maintenance and care

A grandfather clock requires very little maintenance and care. However, the following are some steps that will help you preserve the function and appearance of your clock for many years:

  • Wind your clock regularly (every seven days).
  • Keep the door(s) or side doors/panels closed.
  • Check from time to time whether the clock is still standing securely and upright. This is especially important during the first few months when the clock is standing on carpet(s) or carpeted floors.
  • Occasionally check whether the weights are still firmly screwed in and properly hung, and, if present, whether the wire cables run smoothly in the guides.
  • It is recommended that the movement be oiled by an authorized specialist dealer every five years and thoroughly cleaned every ten years, depending on the location. Under extreme environmental conditions (humidity and air quality, temperature, etc.), the clock may need to be oiled and/or cleaned more often.
