Here you will find a
6-step guide to the correct setup and alignment of
grandfather clocks. At the end of this post, you will also see an example of a Hermle grandfather clock.
What should you pay attention to upon delivery?
- The grandfather clock is either delivered by our delivery and assembly service, where we at Uhren4you.de help you with the setup, or
- the clock is delivered upright on a pallet by a freight carrier.
- Often the clock, weights, and pendulum are packaged separately, or they come together in one box.
- The contents should include: 1. clock, 2. pendulum, 3. weights, 4. gloves, 5. operating instructions.
6-step guide for grandfather clocks
1. Set up the
grandfather clock correctly and, if necessary, level it with a spirit level so that it stands completely level on a flat and stable surface.
2. Carefully remove all securing materials such as cardboard, foam, Styrofoam, and rubber bands, and make sure that all chains hang down and are free. Please use gloves, as otherwise the metal may tarnish from sweat if touched frequently.
3. Hang the pendulum on the loop at the back. First carefully feel for the loop or find it with a flashlight.
4. Weights vary in heaviness: two of equal weight and one lighter one. The different functions of the weights are 1. hourly strike, 2. movement, 3. melody. Pay attention to what is specified in the operating instructions and at which point each weight should be placed. This varies from clock to clock. Different weights are usually marked on the underside with labels or identified by different loops for hanging. Then hang the weights on the chain at the loop.
Rope drive does not have chains; the weights are hung directly on the loop at the top.
5. The grandfather clock often has a 7-8 day movement, meaning that is how long it takes until the weights have reached the bottom again and the clock stops running. Then pull the chain to wind the weights back up.
Rope drive: In this case, the clock is wound through the holes in the dial.
6. Now gently start the pendulum swinging and turn the hands slightly clockwise, and the clock will run!
The Hermle 01245-740791 features a 14-day skeleton movement in a nickel finish with a cord wind-up and a crank. The mechanical clock strikes the bell every hour.
