How does an automatic watch work? The Zeppelin 7062-5

The classic first questions about how an automatic watch works are usually: What kind of energy keeps these watches running? Do automatic watches need batteries? And does the automatic watch have to be wound manually?

To answer these questions, we offer you a short technical and easy-to-understand introduction to the topic here: How does an automatic watch work?

This is how an automatic watch works!

An automatic watch converts the movement of the wearer's arm into winding energy. This works as follows: Continuous arm movement exerts torque on the watch's rotor. The rotor, which is mounted on ball bearings inside the watch, remains stationary in space because it is subject to the physical laws of inertia and gravity.

The torque transfers the force to the winding mechanism. This means the mainspring is continuously wound solely by the wearer's natural hand or arm movements. For this reason, an automatic watch of course does not need a battery. And manual winding is also unnecessary with this technology, because the watch itself uses kinetic energy to continuously maintain timekeeping accuracy. The spring, which is evenly tensioned at all times, guarantees an absolutely smooth running of the watch and thus an extremely precise indication of time. The bridge, also called a slipping clutch, ensures that the spring cannot be overwound. Of course, the automatic watch also has a power reserve, which ensures that it does not stop even when at rest.

This power reserve varies in automatic watches depending on the model between 12 and 36 hours. If the watch is not worn for a longer period of time, the purchase of a watch winder is recommended. This small device simulates human arm movements, ensuring that all functions of the watch remain active.
