The Founder Joseph Bulova

Joseph Bulova was born on September 7, 1851, in Bohemia, Czechoslovakia. He lived there with his parents and four siblings, of whom he was the youngest. His father Antonio worked as a toll officer, but died at the age of just 41. The young Joseph undoubtedly found an exemplary model of courage and enterprise in the way his mother, Barbara Kraus Bulova, coped with this terrible tragedy. Afterwards, they moved with their small family to Prague and opened a grocery store there. As was customary at the time, young Joseph was sent into apprenticeship at an early age, which he completed with a jeweler. After three years, he finished his apprenticeship and was now a fully trained jeweler. At the age of 18, he went to America, the land of his dreams. In the late 1860s, a great deal was happening in America. Only about a year after his arrival, he was faced with the nation's greatest depression, triggered by the Civil War. Fortunately, the situation improved after a few years, allowing him to work diligently in his profession. It did not take very long before the idea and desire for his own business arose. Easier said than done! With capital of $500, which he had borrowed from a friend, he opened a small shop on Canal Street where he made jewelry and also offered repairs. In 1879, he obtained American citizenship. Over time, the company grew, and the manufacturing firm J. Bulova & Company became the Bulova Watch Company, with factories and case manufacturers at home and abroad. At its peak, more than 1,000 people were employed, and the name Bulova became known for high quality. Joseph Bulova died on November 18, 1935, respected by all who worked with him, loved by those who knew him, and a symbol of the land of opportunity that he loved so much.
