Illumination and Luminous Numerals on Wristwatches
During the day, wristwatches have many ways to impress – whether through the design of the case and strap, the design of the dial, or elaborate complications. But in the dark, not much of that can still be seen. While some watches are then almost completely unnoticeable, others still let you read the time thanks to luminous hands and illumination. Some models are especially fascinating for their particularly beautiful glow. But what is the difference between dial illumination and luminous numerals?
Wristwatches with dial illumination
A lit dial on a wristwatch offers the advantage of being easy to see and read the current time even in the dark.
There are also a few wristwatches equipped with a small lamp as dial illumination or with a flashlight function, but such models are rather rare in the luxury segment and are more commonly found among outdoor or camping products.
On both models, Casio GAW-100B-1A2ER and Master Time MTGS-10555-21M, there is a small lamp below the 6 o'clock index that illuminates the dial from below. To activate the backlight on the Casio watch, a slight twist of the wrist is enough. This works when the light in the surroundings fades. The lighting function on the Master Time wristwatch is activated by pressing a button on the case.
Wristwatches with luminous numerals
When high-quality wristwatches with illumination are mentioned, this usually refers more to the fact that the hands and indices or dials of these watches are coated with luminous material, so that the time can also be read easily in the dark.
Traditionally, luminous hands and luminous indices are found mainly on pilot, diving, and military watches. In addition to the purely practical reasons for using hands and indices that glow in the dark, many manufacturers now also deliberately make use of the aesthetic appeal that a dial equipped in this way can unfold in the dark.
On these two models, Eco Tech Time EGS-11301-22L and Vostok Europe 9516-5554251, the dial features luminous numerals. On the Eco Tech Time men's wristwatch, the Arabic numerals and hands glow. Here, the luminous function is triggered by pressing a button on the case. On the Vostok watch, the baton indices and hands glow. The illumination is triggered by turning the bezel up or down. The luminous hands are called Super-LumiNova here.
