Our watch of the week is the Messerschmitt 108-24DR. It is a
men's watch and a pilot's watch. But what exactly makes Messerschmitt watches special, and when is a watch considered a pilot's watch? You can find out all this in this blog post.
The Messerschmitt pilot watches
Messerschmitt is a licensed brand of the Messerschmitt Foundation based in Munich. Wilhelm Emil Messerschmitt, who lived from 1898 to 1978, set high quality standards for technical products not only as an aircraft designer and aviation pioneer. The Messerschmitt Foundation, founded by him in 1969, is dedicated throughout Europe to the care and preservation of historic buildings and cultural monuments. Messerschmitt watches impress with their classically distinctive design and high-quality technical inner workings.
A pilot's watch is a wristwatch developed since the beginning of the 20th century for the needs of pilots. Since aviation was among the most advanced feats of engineering in the 20th century, many watch manufacturers offered pilot's wristwatches far beyond actual demand in order to share in the myth of precision and high technology. All pioneering achievements in aviation and space travel can be found in the company history of the watch manufacturers in question. The actual pilot's watches that were truly used were early on installed in instrument panels and developed from the already technologically advanced chronometers used at sea. Today, the distinction from a military watch is often less about real technical differences than about marketing, especially advertising. In modern aviation, there is no real need for timepieces worn on the wrist anymore.
