The tradition of Mother’s Day

The origins of Mother’s Day go back to the American and English women’s movement and began in 1865 with the founding of a mothers’ movement by the American Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis. The movement was called Mothers Friendship Day, and at the meetings she organised, mothers had the opportunity to exchange ideas on topics related to motherhood and upbringing. The day was also used as a timely occasion for pleasant conversations among women. In Europe too, various clubs and movements by and for women emerged in the 1860s, aiming for better educational opportunities for girls, more women’s rights, and peace projects. The Women’s Environmental Association – founded in 1890 – then campaigned at international women’s congresses for greater recognition of mothers.
