Our watch of the week is an AMS regulator, to be precise the modern AMS 2717. At first glance, regulators may not seem like modern
wall clocks, but most people would be mistaken. With modern gray tones, wood, and glass finishes, classic regulators can also look very contemporary. The AMS 2717 impresses with several functions. Find out more now.
A pendulum clock
Our watch of the week is, among other things, a
pendulum clock. The pendulum clock, also called a pendule or pendulum clock, is a clock whose timekeeper is a mechanical pendulum. The swing of the pendulum sets the timing rhythm; a pendulum about 1 m long swings from one side to the other in 1 second. The shorter the pendulum, the more often it swings per second.
The principle of the pendulum clock is based on the fact that an oscillating or rotating pendulum triggers an action in the movement every time it passes a certain point in its path, causing the time display to advance. In addition, the pendulum receives an impulse from the movement or another drive so that the oscillation is maintained despite the loss of energy due to friction. The regularity of the pendulum's movement is decisive for the clock's accuracy, which is why great attention is paid to the design of the pendulum and the triggering of the action in the movement.
AMS 2717- Mechanical clock and regulator
Our watch of the week is also a mechanical clock. Mechanical movements are multi-stage gear trains whose wheels rotate at a constant angular speed. They derive their driving energy from a mechanical energy store. The stored potential energy is released in a controlled way and converted into rotary motion.
A regulator is understood to mean an accurately running pendulum clock, a box-shaped pendulum wall clock, as well as a regulator with striking mechanisms. The AMS 2717 combines all of these functions.
The AMS wall clock is also visually impressive. The case is an anthracite-colored wooden case with an aluminum finish. The dial is a silver-toned chapter ring with black Arabic numerals. The dial and pendulum are protected by curved mineral glass. The movement is an 8-day striking movement with a bell strike on the hour. The clock does not have an automatic night shut-off.
