The Confederations Cup is an intercontinental tournament for national football teams. In 1992 and 1995, it was held as the King Fahd Cup; since 1997, it has been run by the world football governing body. The tournament was initially held every two years until 2005 and has since been played every four years. Eligible teams are the current champions of the six continental confederations, the reigning world champion, and the host nation.
Since the Confederations Cup 2001, like the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea, the tournament has served as an organizational dress rehearsal for the host country of the next FIFA World Cup.
