Atlanta 4545 in Porthole Design

Our watch of the week is the Atlanta 4545. This special wall clock is distinguished by the shape of a porthole. In this article, learn what else makes our watch of the week special, for example that as a garden clock it is also suitable for outdoor use.

The Shape of the Porthole

The term porthole is used in several fields. Portholes can be found not only in shipbuilding and space travel, but also in washing machines, architecture, and automotive engineering. In seafaring language, it usually means a circular window. In shipping, portholes serve as waterproof side windows in the hulls of ships and submarines. Their often round or rounded shape makes sealing easier and increases pressure resistance against water from the outside. The function of portholes is the same as that of windows in a building: they let in daylight or provide ventilation for the individual rooms below deck. They also make it possible to observe the surroundings. For this reason, portholes on ships are installed only above the waterline. Windows in the same shape as those on ships are also used in space travel, for example on the International Space Station. They are used to see outside. They are generally made of quartz glass, as the glass must withstand a temperature difference of several hundred Kelvin without cracking under the strain. The frame is made of titanium and then coated with enamel.

Our Atlanta 4545

Our watch of the week, the Atlanta 4545, consists of a silver-gray plastic case with gold-colored screws in the shape of a porthole. The dial is protected by mineral glass. The dial is slightly raised and is white with black Arabic numerals and baton markers. In addition to the hour and minute, the temperature and humidity can also be read on the classic wall clock in two chronographs. This makes this clock ideal for outdoor use and, with its antique look, blends in perfectly outside.
