The durable wristwatch

A wristwatch must work continuously 24 hours a day. The important thing is not to neglect care and maintenance. A few precautions and simple tips are needed to keep the watch working well in the long term.

Read the operating instructions carefully

The world of wristwatches is very diverse, and watches differ greatly in their features. Apart from the so-called "time-only watch," there are watches with many technical refinements that often even perform well in extreme situations. That is why you should know the technical features and how the watches work before use. Careful study of the operating instructions ensures that the watch buyer is spared unpleasant surprises. (e.g. by unknowingly exposing the watch to too much moisture.)

The three most important basic rules for using wristwatches

Wristwatches often look the same at first glance (like the two selected models on the left in the picture), but the models often conceal different movement types. So find out exactly what kind of watch it is so you can treat it accordingly!

When buying a mechanical wristwatch, you should definitely follow the basic rules that are important when winding watches. For example, do not forget that a wristwatch with manual winding should be taken off the wrist when winding it. This prevents sideways pressure from being placed on the winding stem, which has a very negative effect on the individual parts.

With quartz watches, you should definitely not overlook the necessary care when it comes to batteries. We therefore recommend that if the watch will not be worn for longer periods, the crown should be pulled out to interrupt the power supply. This protects the battery and makes it much longer-lasting. In addition, the quartz continues to oscillate in this way and therefore requires only a minimal amount of energy.
When watch batteries run out, they should be replaced as quickly as possible. Otherwise, fluid may leak out.

As another essential point, we always recommend that customers pay attention to the so-called water resistance of the watch when buying one. If you want to use the watch for swimming and possibly even diving, a watch with at least 10 bar is recommended. Watches below this value are only conditionally water-resistant and, depending on the stated pressure, for example only 3 bar or 5 bar, can be classified as splashproof. Complete water resistance is difficult to achieve, as the parts are subject to wear. For this reason, even diving watches from 10 bar should be checked at regular intervals by specialists with special equipment to ensure they are fit for use. At the latest after a battery change, the watch's water resistance must be checked with a device.
