The minimalist Atlanta 4498/7

Our Watch of the Week is the Atlanta 4498/7. It is a particularly modern home clock that impresses with its minimalist design. But where does the term minimalism come from, and what makes our Atlanta watch so minimalist?

Minimalism

Minimalism can refer to various areas of life, such as art, architecture, music, or linguistics, or it describes a lifestyle, namely a simple life. In this article, we take a closer look at the architecture and lifestyle of minimalism. Minimalism is an architectural style that is essentially defined by its simple design language and its renunciation of decorative elements. Its origins lie in the architectural modernism of the 1920s, and to this day minimalism forms the design foundation for many contemporary architects. The use of a minimalist language is basically not a phenomenon of modern architecture, but was already present in the past. In many eras of architectural history, builders and architects strove to give buildings purity of form and clear geometries. Simple living, also known as minimalism or downshifting, refers to a lifestyle that sees itself as an alternative to a consumer-oriented society of abundance. People critical of consumerism try to counter everyday constraints by giving up consumption and thus lead a self-determined, fulfilling life.

Our Atlanta 4498/7

Our Watch of the Week, the Atlanta 4498/7, is minimalist because it does away with all the unnecessary frills. It has been reduced to the point where it can only fulfill its purpose, namely displaying the time. And it is precisely this kind of design that makes the wall clock so modern. It does not have a large clock case, but only a thin black metal rim, which also forms the entire dial. From the center, where the movement is located, a black hour hand and minute hand extend. The special feature is that the minute hand is connected to the outer metal rim, so it automatically rotates with it as the minutes pass. Because of this design and because there is no second hand, the clock is also silent.
