The modern cuckoo clock AMS 7287

The Traditional Cuckoo Clock

The cuckoo clock is traditionally made mainly in the Black Forest. It has gained worldwide recognition. It is often a wall clock whose mechanical pendulum movement is equipped with a chain drive and striking mechanism. Since the mid-19th century, the basic shape of the case has usually been modeled on a railway guard's house with a pitched roof and decorated with more or less elaborately carved wooden ornaments. However, the actual feature that gives the cuckoo clock its name is the striking mechanism. As an acoustic time signal, it uses a mechanical cuckoo, which is mounted movably in the case behind a door-like flap above the dial and is usually swung out on the hour. Depending on the design, the mechanical cuckoo – traditionally carved from wood and painted, now often made of plastic – moves in time with the cuckoo call or opens its beak.

In addition, one or more cuckoo calls sound, on the hour according to the number of hours (full hours are counted), usually together with a gong. The “cuckoo call” is traditionally produced by a pair of organ pipes of different pitches inside the clock. Other moving decorative elements can also be attached to the outside of the clock.

The modern version of the traditional cuckoo clock

Compared with the traditional cuckoo clock, the AMS 7287 is designed in a very modern and cute style. It features a lacquered wooden case in anthracite. Unlike the many traditional dark brown walnut wall clocks, this cuckoo clock has been kept in a modern tone. The many decorations and scrollwork on the wooden case have also been omitted. This cuckoo clock is painted white and shows a tree with leaves. A white plastic bird appears every hour. A red bird is also included. The cuckoo call also sounds on the hour. To ensure this does not disturb you at night, there is an automatic night shut-off and volume control. The wall clock also has black Arabic numerals and red hands.

There is also a variant from the AMS brand. It consists of a white lacquered wooden case with an anthracite-colored tree. The red bird appears every hour, but a white replacement bird is also included. In addition, it has a red pendulum and red hands.
