The modern Sternglas STO13/405 men's watch
Our watch of the week is the Sternglas STO13/405. In this article, we not only describe the stylish men's watch model, but also the founding story behind Sternglas watches. The extravagant Bauhaus-style watches are now also available in our shop. Learn more about them now.
Founding of Sternglas
The Hamburg start-up Sternglas creates watches in the Bauhaus style. The online community provided the seed capital and still helps decide on the design today. By now, founder Dustin Fontaine is 28 years old and the founder and co-creator of the watch label. To this day, the Hamburg resident by choice has neither driven across Germany nor visited a single jeweler. Instead, in October 2016 he presented his creations on a crowdfunding platform in order to raise the necessary money from the online community for the first production run. 118 people took part in the pre-sale of a watch brand that had not existed before. They were won over by the minimalist design, the manual winding, the interchangeable straps, the sapphire crystal and the relatively low price, and ordered Fontaine's watches, which are inspired by the Bauhaus style. More than 16,000 euros were raised this way.
When he was finally happy with his designs one day, he still needed a name for his baby. He wrote 500 German terms into an Excel file, combined them, and discarded them again. That went on for three months. “At some point,” says Fontaine, “I came up with star and glass. That fit.” The brand name was born.
The Sternglas STO13/405
The Sternglas STO13/405 men's watch has a relatively thick case, which is 10 mm high. As a result, the dial sits quite deep and is protected by a slightly domed, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. The men's watch has a black Milanese stainless steel strap and a black stainless steel case. The dial is also black, which makes the watch look so uniform and refined. The dial features very delicate white Arabic numerals as well as a slim baton index. Around the outer edge, there are also Arabic numerals marking the seconds. In addition to a date display, there are thin black-and-white hands. Since this Sternglas watch is an automatic watch, the Miyota movement can be seen from the back. The mechanical wristwatch has a power reserve of 42 hours and is water resistant to 5 bar.
