International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day has its roots in the women workers’ movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The exact time and place where the idea of a political “women’s struggle day” first emerged is not entirely clear. What is clear, however, is that in many countries from the end of the 19th century onward, women’s and women workers’ movements advocated for a day on which women would campaign nationally, or worldwide, for equal rights, higher wages, and better working conditions for women, as well as for women’s suffrage and against discrimination. In Germany, International Women’s Day is a public holiday in only one federal state: Berlin. In January 2019, the Berlin House of Representatives passed a corresponding resolution and added International Women’s Day as a public holiday to the “Act on Sundays and Public Holidays” of the state of Berlin. Worldwide, International Women’s Day is a public holiday in a total of 26 countries.
