Father’s Day traditions

Father’s Day, also regionally called Men’s Day or Gentlemen’s Day, is a custom celebrated in various parts of the world in honor of fathers. This year it falls on May 10, 2018.

The popular Father’s Day in Germany is celebrated on Ascension Day. In eastern Germany it is also referred to as Men’s Day, and in Saxony and Thuringia the term “Men’s Day” is used.

The current form of “celebrating Father’s Day” emerged in Berlin and the surrounding area at the end of the 19th century and has enjoyed great popularity among men ever since. Since 1934, Ascension Day has been a public holiday in Germany; in the GDR, the day was a public holiday only until 1966 and again in 1990. In the GDR, various options were used to still be able to take a “Men’s Day outing” on this day. For example, members of religious communities had the right to celebrate their holidays, provided this was granted or could be granted by their employer.
