Women's watches and men's watches all have a clasp. These come in different versions, mostly depending on the material of the strap. In this article, you'll find all the information you need about the different types of watch clasps.
Fold-over clasp - opened with a click
Unlike butterfly clasp designs, fold-over clasps have only one metal bar that opens in one direction. Fold-over clasps vary in appearance: some have a side-mounted push button that lets you open the clasp easily. These watch clasps are usually attached to the watch strap using spring bars. The preferred material for fold-over clasps is stainless steel.
An example of a fold-over clasp is our Bulova 98P174
women's watch. The Bulova watch has a two-tone stainless steel link bracelet in silver and rose gold.
Butterfly clasp - like the wings of a butterfly
While buckle clasps have a more traditional character, watches with clasp fastenings look modern. A clasp also makes it easier and quicker to open and close your watch strap. The butterfly clasp owes its name to two metal bars that open in both directions like the wings of a butterfly. Some butterfly clasps have a push button that lets you snap the watch clasp open. Other watches with a butterfly clasp do not have a push button.
Safety clasp - more hold thanks to an extra bar
Like fold-over clasps, safety clasps open only to one side. In addition, this watch clasp has a safety bar that you can open and close separately. This keeps the watch especially secure on the wrist and prevents it from opening accidentally. The safety clasp is therefore also suitable for sports watches. It is also used on watches with stainless steel or silicone straps.
Buckle clasps - classic clasp for leather and fabric straps
Buckle clasps are usually made of metal, but they are not used on watches with metal bracelets; they are mainly used with leather, fabric, rubber, or synthetic straps.
