Watches with Chronographs - Chronos

Nautica Chronograph

When looking at sales figures for wristwatches, it becomes clear that models with chronographs consistently top the charts. Men in particular are enthusiastic and fascinated by this type of watch. These special watches are distinguished by an additional movement, which is operated mechanically or electronically to measure the duration of events.

It is even possible to stop two processes with different starting times and different durations. However, such timekeeping requires an additional mechanism in the form of another hand, known as a drag hand or rattrapante. From an aesthetic point of view, chronographs impress with their distinctly sporty design. The two side pushers and the dial with its numerous indications give even gold models a rather understated character.

However, a large proportion of these watches was designed and developed exclusively for professional use, e.g. for pilots, technicians, geologists, and military personnel. Most chronographs are characterized by an extremely strict functional appearance. This applies, for example, to the entire product range from Omega or Breitling, whose models have always been closely associated with aviation. Numerous details also reveal a professional specialization in the civilian versions. These include the scales on the dial, the anti-reflective watch crystal, the generously sized luminous markers, or the extremely robust and reliable construction.

Special developments

When talking about chronographs, one must by no means forget Zenith, which with its El Primero movement has achieved a true milestone in the field of mechanical watchmaking. It is the first automatic high-frequency chronograph movement, which has been continuously developed and is used in the brand's top models. With 360000 half-oscillations per hour, El Primero achieves the highest precision possible in a mechanical movement. A case made of steel or gold, as well as an absolutely strict and clear design, characterize Girard-Perregaux's top products. This also includes the "Pour Ferrari" series, which was designed as part of a precisely agreed arrangement with the Scuderia from Maranello.
