Rain and hand washing

For everyday life in Central Europe—i.e., occasional rain, hand washing, and washing dishes without submersion—3 bar is technically sufficient. Anyone who doesn't leave the watch on their wrist while washing their hands is on the safe side even with 3 bar. If you tend to forget, you are better off with 5 bar.

Swimming pool and vacation at the pool

For swimming in a pool or in the sea, 10 bar is the sensible lower limit. The dynamic pressure peaks during the crawl stroke or jumping into the water quickly exceed the static laboratory pressure, and a 10-bar watch still has sufficient reserve. Chlorinated water also attacks seals and coatings; this affects all classes equally and is not an argument for a specific protection class, but rather an argument for rinsing the watch afterward.

Snorkeling

Case, seals, and crown: where water can really enter
