The history of Zeppelin
The name "Zeppelin" goes back to the German aviation pioneer Ferdinand Count von Zeppelin, who was born in 1838 and devoted his life to aviation. He was the founder and developer of the first rigid airship construction. A rigid airship is an airship whose aerodynamic framework consists entirely of steel girders and struts.
In 1900, Ferdinand G. von Zeppelin completed his first prototype, the LZ1. The airships that followed played a particularly dominant role in rigid airship aviation, so much so that the term Zeppelin came to be used as a synonym for rigid airship.
The first Zeppelins were already being used for passenger flights before World War I. The watches from the Zeppelin brand are visually strongly inspired by the era of German airship construction in the early 20th century. Zeppelin offers many different collections named after the airships of that time. Each collection is visually based on a different airship.
These Zeppelin collections are available:
- 100 Years Zeppelin
- LZ127 Graf Zeppelin
- LZ129 Hindenburg
- LZ126 Los Angeles
- LZ120 Rome Lady
- LZ120 Rome
In addition, there are other Zeppelin collections, but these are not connected to the airships.
LZ 129 - The Hindenburg, the largest airship in the world!
Probably the most famous airship of all is the LZ 129 Hindenburg, named after German President Paul von Hindenburg. To this day, the Hindenburg is also the largest aircraft ever built in history. The Hindenburg's maiden voyage took place in March 1936.
The ship was 245 meters long and had a diameter of 41.2 meters. It held a total gas volume of 200,000 cubic meters. At its cruising altitude of 400-600 meters, it could reach speeds of 100-120 km/h.
Only the wealthiest people of that era could afford a journey on the Hindenburg. A crossing from Berlin to New York cost around 40,000 Reichsmarks, which is roughly equivalent to 10,000 euros today. You could say the Hindenburg was a flying luxury hotel where guests lacked nothing. There were 2 decks with a total of 36 cabins and 72 beds. The cabins had a fold-out washbasin and a so-called call button that could be used to summon staff.
The Hindenburg disaster
A devastating disaster occurred on the tenth crossing to New York. Together with its sister ship LZ 130, the two giants set out on 3 May 1937. Due to strong headwinds near Newfoundland, the travel speed had to be reduced to 100 km/h. As a result, the Hindenburg arrived in New York about 10 hours later. At first, there was no permission to land due to bad weather. After another 1.5 hours, air traffic control in Lakehurst finally granted landing permission.
While mooring at the mast, Max Pruss, the captain of the Hindenburg, faced the challenge of keeping the Hindenburg level. To do this, he repeatedly released gas from the bow cells and water from the ballast tanks.
When the Hindenburg was still 60 meters above the mast, small flames suddenly flickered at the stern. The lifting gas ignited, and the fire spread forward at 15 m per second.
Only 30 seconds passed from the start of the fire to the impact. In this disaster, 35 of the 97 people on board lost their lives.
The crash of the Hindenburg marked the end of the history of commercial Zeppelin airship travel.
