Maple - the sun worshipper among the trees

Maples are mostly deciduous, but sometimes evergreen, trees or shrubs. Maple wood is used in the construction and furniture industries. The sycamore maple and the Norway maple are primarily relevant for this.

Sycamore wood is one of the most precious hardwoods. It is yellowish white to white in color, whereas Norway maple wood has more of a reddish-white coloration. In both species, the annual rings are clearly visible. Maple wood is elastic but also hard. It is also quite resistant to bending. A sycamore maple can live up to 500 years, but its bark flakes off after a certain age. The adult maple tree needs plenty of sun to continue living. It practically takes care of its own fertiliser, as its leaves form good humus. Nevertheless, it likes to grow in nutrient-rich soils. In addition, a cool, humid climate needs to thrive. Its wood is used for high-quality furniture and interior decoration, as it is beautifully bright and thus gives freshness to the room. Norway maple, on the other hand, lives for a maximum of 200 years, but is also less demanding. It doesn't mind a little more drought and a lower nutrient supply from the soil.

Sugar maple, which is widely used in North America, is used to make maple syrup. This is a natural sweetener and, according to legend, was already known to the Iroquois. Those Indians collected the sap of the maple trees and processed it into syrup with the help of cooking stones. The majority of maple syrup is now produced in Québec, Canada. It is very aromatic and tastes especially good with pancakes.

But back to the maple wood. Of course, this is also used for watches and thus becomes beautiful, timeless eye-catchers in every home. The wood of the maple tree is very easy and easy to work with after it has dried. This means that different stain tones or varnishes are quite possible.
